It's March! And that means SPRING is finally on its way. Even though it's still a little early, I am officially in spring cleaning mode. This weekend, E and I were able to give away about 5 laundry baskets full of clothing we don't wear anymore. It will all go towards a church clothing exchange that will occur in May. It sure felt good to get all of that clothing out of the apartment. I can actually move the hangers around in my closet because they aren't jammed in there anymore.
I also started some deep cleaning this weekend. Cleaners can get to be so costly, so I did some searching for some homemade cleaners - made with items you most likely already have in your kitchen. I found an amazing site - One Good Thing by Jillee - that has a ton of cleaners you can make from the comfort of your home - and pretty much for pennies!
Make Your Own Refills for Your Swiffer WetJet
This is a REALLY easy one. At One Good Thing by Jillee, she uses a 1:1 ratio of water to vinegar and then added 2-3 drops of dish soap (blue dawn dish soap recommended). I did exactly this (used 3 drops of dish soap) and it worked SO good. My floors were so clean. And I was able to save a TON of money not having to buy a refill from Swiffer. Because those sure get costly!
I was even able to reuse the bottle I got when I bought my Swiffer WetJet. In searching for a homemade cleaner, I also found that if you boil water and then place the top of the refill bottle in the boiling water for about 30 seconds, you can get the cap off of the refill bottle and reuse it. You will still need to twist a good amount (I actually had my husband do it, but it might be easier if you leave it in the boiling water longer), but it will come off. And when you put the cap back on, it won't leak and you won't have to boil it again. It will continue to twist on and off.
Make Your Own All-Purpose Cleaner
The other cleaner I tried from One Good Thing by Jillee was a homemade all-purpose cleaner. The recipe originally came from Food.com.
I was able to get this great spray bottle from the Dollar Tree for - you guessed it - $1.00! The great thing about this bottle is that it has the ratio fill-lines - which is super helpful in measuring out the specific ingredients.
This cleaner requires a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and blue dawn dish soap. After reading Jillee's post, I did what she recommended and used a 2:1 ratio of vinegar to dish soap. Make sure you heat the vinegar - I missed the part about heating the vinegar, but it still worked great. I will have to heat the vinegar next time to see how much BETTER it works!
I have not been able to clean my shower as well as I did this weekend - and that was with store bought cleaners. I was pretty amazed with the results. No scrubbing was involved. Just sprayed, let soak for about an hour and then rinsed. I did use a toothbrush to get into the corners of the grout, and those were my worst areas, but other than that - it was the easiest clean I have done. And the best part was that I felt like I could BREATHE the entire time I was in the bathroom!
Be sure to check out One Good Thing by Jillee for some other great homemade cleaners - she has such a GREAT site!
What are some other homemade cleaners that you have tried that work great?
