DIY Headboard Makeover

April has been a month of getting things done for E and I.  We've been preparing for his board exam full-on, which is one reason why I've been a little absent this month.  I also opened my etsy shop this month - Eliorah!  Be sure to check it out (and follow me on Facebook for the latest news and coupons!)

Today we finally finished a project we have had on our list.  A couple months ago we picked up a headboard for our guest room at Sears during a closeout sale - a $150 headboard for $30!  Quite a steal, in my opinion.  It was the shape we had been looking for, but not the color, so we decided to do a headboard makeover.

E and I knew that we wanted a grey burlap to cover the black leather with, but we were having a difficult time locating some.  We were ready to order on line.  BUT, this weekend, we were out shopping with my mom and she found some amazing grey burlap curtain panels.  I've got to say - I love TJMaxx, we got a package of two panels for a big whopping $20!

This is what we started off with:

Not bad, but not exactly what we wanted.  The color scheme in our guest room is grey and teal, and this wasn't the look I was going for.  We first removed the 'headboard' from the base.

Next, I laid out the drape panel AFTER giving it a good iron job.  Had to make sure to get those creases out from it being folded in the package! Make sure you put the side you want to see facing the floor.

We then laid the headboard, on top of the drape panel.  We proceeded to staple the panel around the edge of the headboard with a hand staple gun (which I failed to get a picture of us doing - sorry!).  Make sure you pull tight!  We did the two long sides and checked how it was looking and then did the two short sides.  When you are done stapling all the sides, and it is how you want it (tightness), excess material can be trimmed off.  I think it turned out pretty good!

My amazing husband then attached it to the bed.

I absolutely love how it turned out! It goes perfect with the colors of our bed linens in that room.

A nice, quick, inexpensive do-it-yourself project - the total cost was under $50!  And now we also have an extra matching panel to use as a curtain, to make some matching pillows, re-cover a lampshade, or find another use for.
