I've mentioned before that E and I LOVE our bread machine. We make a homemade pizza just about every week, and E has pretty much perfected it. So I was pretty pumped last week when E found this recipe for homemade bread bowls using your bread machine to make the dough. And were they absolutely deliciously amazing! They have just a touch of sweetness and don't come out with a hard crust.
The night we made these, we decided just to used canned clam chowder. Check out some homemade soups here that can also be used. A good broccoli cheddar soup would also taste amazing! Whatever soup, chowder, chili, or stew you decide to use though, it will be delicious!
Prep Time: ~ 2 hours Cook Time: 20-25 minutes Yields: 4 bread bowls
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup warm water (110-115 degrees)
- 1/2 cup warm milk (110-115 degrees)
- 1 egg (room temperature)
- 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- cornmeal, for baking pan
Directions
- In a microwaveable container, beat the egg and add the milk and water to it. Microwave on high for 40 seconds.
- Place in bread machine according to the order of your machine, or as listed in the order above. Do not add in the cornmeal! Set machine to dough cycle (this a a 1.5 pound recipe).
- Once the cycle is complete, take the dough out and place on a floured surface. Divide the dough into 4 equal sizes. Be sure not to work the dough too much - just enough to shape into rounds.
- Spread a thin layer of cornmeal on the baking pan and place all 4 dough rounds on the pan. Cover with a thin towel to let rise in a non-drafty area for approximately 1 hour.
- Once the 4 rounds have doubled in size, bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. If you want, you can even lightly slice a design into the top of each loaf right before you place in the oven! (For those of you at higher elevations, bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.)
- Remove the 4 rounds and place on a cooling rack.
- For the bowls, cut a thin layer across top and hollow out to about 1/4-1/2 inch in thickness.
- Fill with your favorite chili, chowder, or stew and enjoy!
